What's the story?
Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most historic and culturally rich cities, is known as the “City of Saints” due to its deep Islamic heritage and numerous mosques and shrines. Located in the eastern part of Ethiopia, Harar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its ancient walls, unique architecture, and vibrant traditions. The city was a major center of trade and Islamic scholarship for centuries, influencing the culture of the region and beyond. Its old town, Jegol, is surrounded by a 16th-century wall with five gates, preserving a distinct way of life that blends Ethiopian, Arabian, and Indian influences. Harar is also famous for its colorful markets, rich coffee culture, and the legendary “Hyena Men”, who feed wild hyenas by hand in a tradition that has been passed down for generations. It remains a symbol of Ethiopia’s diversity, history, and resilience.
